While the official narrative of the mainstream (and partly “Catholic”) media depicts a merciful Vatican attempting a final mediation with the “rebels” of Ecône, the reality of the documents published by the Priestly Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) tells a diametrically opposite story. The Society’s recent communique, supported by a documentary chronology, reveals that the dialogue is not “at the beginning,” but has already been extensively tested and, in fact, sabotaged by Vatican demands that are theologically unacceptable. All of this, of course, assuming (but not granting) that dialogue with those who deny the foundations of doctrine and reason is even possible in itself.

The Failure of “Dialogue”: An Ultimatum Rather Than a Closing

The narrative of a “new course” of dialogue appears today as a tactical operation. The documents reveal that reconciliation attempts foundered not due to Lefebvrian stubbornness, but because of the imposition of clauses that would have forced the Society to disown the teachings of the Church and, therefore, its own reason for being.

As early as the Letter from Cardinal Müller to Bishop Fellay (June 6, 2017), the stakes were set for what amounted to a true ultimatum. In that text, the then-Prefect of the Doctrine of the Faith demanded full acceptance of the Second Vatican Council and the legitimacy of the New Mass, leaving no real room for critical discussion. The SSPX’s response has always been clear: Truth cannot be traded for a canonical regularization that would serve as a doctrinal “trap”—one that has already shown its disastrous fruits in other cases (see the case of Campos, for example).

This incompatibility and the vacuity of the “dialogue” were confirmed following the Letter from the Superior General (Fr. Davide Pagliarani) to Archbishop Guido Pozzo on January 17, 2019. The positions are irreconcilable: on one side, perennial Tradition; on the other, an ecclesial vision that has embraced the ecumenism and liberalism condemned by previous Popes. The “dialogue” broke down at a point of rupture concerning the Faith, not bureaucracy. The sudden Vatican proposal-threat to reopen it now, following the announcement of episcopal consecrations (with the clause of their suspension), shows that the objective is likely something else entirely.

An Outstretched Hand? Reversing the Reality: A Vatican in Rubble vs. a Flourishing Tradition

It is necessary to reverse the communicative perspective: it is not a “strong” Vatican reaching out to “poor, marginalized Lefebvrians.” Reality shows a hierarchy in the grip of an unprecedented crisis: closing churches, deserted seminaries, a lack of vocations leading entire Western dioceses to extinction, and a doctrinal chaos that divides the College of Cardinals on basic issues.

In this desert, the SSPX appears as a flourishing and constantly growing reality: full seminaries, families, Catholic schools, and a liturgical fidelity that attracts more and more young people disillusioned by modernism. The suspicion, supported by facts, is that the renewed Vatican interest is a calculated attempt to “normalize” (meaning neutralize) the only voice that still denounces the failure of the post-Council era, seeking to absorb the fruits of a vitality that Neo-Modernist Rome has lost.

Indeed, we are talking about a true “ecclesial winter” manifesting clearly:

  • The Hemorrhage of Faithful and Vocations: While official dioceses close parishes at a rapid pace, sell off churches by transforming them into cultural centers or libraries, and see their seminaries empty, the SSPX records constant growth. The seminaries of Ecône, Dillwyn, and Zaitzkofen are full of young men ready for the priesthood—a sign that the lifeblood of Tradition has never dried up.
  • Doctrinal and Liturgical Chaos: The Vatican today appears as a theological Tower of Babel, where ambiguous or openly erroneous documents (consider the sensational drifts of Fiducia Supplicans or the German Synodal Path, but especially the Vatican II roots that allow all this) fuel confusion and division.
  • The Failure of the Post-Conciliar Project: The crisis of the hierarchy is not just numerical, but one of identity.

Silencing a critical voice—which reminds the world of what the Church has always been and what the Vatican seems to have forgotten—through inconclusive dialogues on indisputable matters is simply an unfeasible path. We are facing a system that is dismantling itself; if anything, it is the Neo-Modernist hierarchy that needs to rediscover that Tradition which others keep intact.

The Instrumentalization of Obedience

The SSPX communique makes it clear that dusting off old proposals already rejected is essentially an act of propaganda. Presenting the Society in the media as “obstinate” serves to justify potential repressive measures, hiding the fact that the agreement failed because Rome has turned the faith into a matter of opinion and obedience into an acceptance of error.

Beyond the News: Tools to Understand the “Coup” and True Doctrine

To deeply understand the ongoing ecclesial and social crisis without falling into easy discouragement or a purely political reading of events, it is necessary to equip oneself with rigorous theological and historical analysis tools. The current crisis is not an “accident on the road.” There are many study materials to avoid superficial analysis. To name just a few:

  • Clear Words on the Church (Parole chiare sulla Chiesa): In an era where the “magisterium” seems fluid and adaptable to worldly trends, this volume reaffirms the immutable principles of Catholic ecclesiology.
  • Coup in the Church (Golpe nella Chiesa): A raw and documented analysis of how liberal and modernist currents took control of the levers of ecclesiastical power. The book helps frame current Vatican “rapprochement maneuvers” not as acts of charity, but as operations by a faction that, after occupying the top levels, seeks to eliminate any remaining pocket of traditional resistance.
  • Good Philosophy and Philosophical Counter-History (Buona filosofia e contro–storia filosofica: Dall’antichità pagana ad oggi): A work that dismantles the sophisms of modernity, reconstructing the path of philosophical thought against the deviations that led to current relativism.
  • Looking the Revolution in the Eye (La rivoluzione guardata negli occhi): A prophetic book that, by analyzing the revolutionary past, explains the dynamics of the present and anticipates the future of social and ecclesial subversion.

Conclusions

The documents from 2017 and 2019, along with a dozen others that could be cited, speak clearly: no one is seeking a schism. The “hoax” of the evil Lefebvrians rejecting the Vatican’s merciful hand collapses under the weight of reality: the resistance of those who refuse to scrap Tradition is not against the Papacy, but against the demolition of the Church itself.
